Synopsis

What if Clint Eastwood and Mel Brooks became cartoonists and united to create the wackiest, most surreal musical western ever? That’s Slide. It's the story of a corrupt logging village, Sourdough Creek, ruled by two evil twin brothers, Zeke and Jeb, who enjoy nothing more than killing and greed.

One day a mysterious cowboy arrives in town, carrying nothing but his slide guitar.

With his music, Slide battles the forces of the deadly twins. He befriends Delilah, who works as a hooker at the Lucky Buck Bar, which is owned and run by the corrupt, plump twins. Delilah falls in love with Slide and reveals how she wants to be a singer in the Lucky Buck Band, but is too shy.

Then, Slide is joined in his battle with the twin forces of evil by a local Bigfoot-like character called "Hellbug." This whole menagerie is then complicated by the arrival of a Hollywood studio coming to shoot their new feature film there.

The final Armageddon battle is interrupted by the failure of the Sourdough Creek Dam, which results in a happy ending... or does it?

Although it is not a political film, Slide does address some important issues: environmentalism and gun control. This film should easily qualify or the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most evil killers of any major motion picture.

Reviews

Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton’s new 2D animated feature Slide made its Los Angeles premiere at the Los Angeles Animation Festival (LAAF) Saturday, December 9, 2023.

The 2023 Los Angeles Animation Festival (LAAF) wrapped up on Sunday, December 10 with a ceremony honoring winners of this year’s competition across a number of short and feature film categories. Winners were selected by a panel of industry professionals. Colombian director Miguel Ortega’s The Voice in The Hollow garnered awards for Best of the Fest and Best Short, while indie legend Bill Plympton’s ninth feature Slide won for Best Feature Film and Best Feature Director, and took Best Music Video for “Lipstick of the Brave.”

“LAAF is America’s best animation festival,” commented Plympton. “The brilliant LAAF team has curated the next wave of world animation into a very hospitable fest that is crackling with high energy! I will definitely be back next year.”

Plympton has collaborated with Madonna, Kanye West, and Weird Al Yankovic in several music videos and book projects. In 2006, Plympton received the Annie Awards’ Winsor McCay Lifetime Achievement Award. His work includes animating six opening "couch gags" for FOX-TV's The Simpsons. Plympton also received a 2019 Webby Award for his six Trump Bites shorts, which used real audio of Donald Trump.

“The film, inspired by Plympton’s childhood in Oregon and his deep love of country music, stands out for its comedic genre and surreal narrative that defies viewers’ expectations by immersing them in a unique cinematic experience. Replete with Plympton’s distinctive dark humor and expressive hand-drawn animation style, Slide is poised to continue as a highlight of the festival circuit.”

~Mercedes Milligan, Animation Magazine

In Slide, visionary animator Bill Plympton presents a mythical slide guitar-playing cowby confronting eco-villains uprooting Sourdough Creek. Swinging tunes and surreal animation take audiences on a mesmerizing journey, fulfilling Plympton's childhood dream to create a Western set against evergreen-covered mountains. Slide is a true indie gem not to be missed.
